Ever just need a spot for your phone and keys but have zero pockets? Same. That’s exactly why I made this free knitting pattern! Trying to push my son’s stroller while picking up my daughter from school was a struggle—especially with nowhere to stash my stuff (thanks, leggings!). So, I whipped this up over the weekend, and it’s been a total game changer. Of course, I had to share it with you! Keep scrolling for the free knitting pattern and make one for yourself.

The Yarn
Before you jump into this free knitting pattern, let’s talk supplies! The first thing you’ll need is yarn. This pattern only requires one skein, but you won’t use the whole thing. Honestly, I just grabbed a small ball of yarn from my scrap stash! If you want your bag to look exactly like mine, I’ve linked all the yarn I used in the shopping list below with the free knitting pattern. But really, any worsted weight #4 yarn will work. And trust me—once you see how quick and easy this bag is to knit, you’ll want to make one in every color!

The Needles & Hooks
Once you’ve got your yarn, you’ll just need a few basic tools to get started. Grab 3.25mm knitting needles for the bag, a 3.5mm crochet hook and tapestry needle
For this project, I used my go-to favorites: ChiaoGoo Red Lace Circular Needles in US Size 3 (3.25mm). I’ve tried everything—plastic, bamboo, budget metal, but nothing compares to the smooth glide and durability of these. The cables don’t kink, the joins are seamless, and they just feel right in your hands.
If you’re looking to invest in your knitting toolkit, I highly recommend the ChiaoGoo Twist Stainless Steel Interchangeable Set. Yes, they’re a bit of a splurge, but in my experience, it’s the only needle set you’ll ever truly need and totally worth every penny!

The Other Stuff
A couple of extras I love (but aren’t necessary) are a yarn bowl to keep things from getting tangled and a yarn winder for neat, center-pull cakes. And if you plan to block your knit bag, a set of blocking boards will come in handy!

Pattern – Purse Body
Cast on 45 stiches (this will count as your first row) try to leave a long tail. You will use that to sew up one side of the bag.
Rows 1 – 6 (counting the cast on as row one) – K all making a garter stitch
Rows 7-10 – K odds and P evens making a stockinette stitch
Repeat rows 1-10 until you have 6 ribs (60 total rows so far)*
For the bottom of the bag, you are going to knit 12 rows. This creates a thicker bottom for the bag. (72 totals rows)*
Set your counter back to row seven and start the rib pattern over.
In the end you should have 13 ribs including the double bottom rib.*
*PLEASE NOTE FOR RAINBOW BAG – YOU WILL HAVE AN ADDITIONAL COLOR STRIPES – GIVING YOU 15 RIBS
Bind off on the last row of bag, leaving a long tail to use to stitch up the other side of the bag.

Purse Strap
Ch until you reach the desired length for the strap, leaving a long tail to use for sewing the strap to the bag.
I chained 231 stitches
Starting in the second stitch in Ch, DC each stitch, 2 DC in last stitch of Ch.
DO NOT TURN! You will be working the other side of the Ch.
2 DC in the first stitch on the other side of the Ch.
DC into each stich until you reach the end of the Ch. Tie off leaving a long tail to sew the strap to bag.
Assembly
If you want to block your bag, now’s the perfect time! I wet blocked two of mine—one before assembly and one after—and it definitely helped shape them better than the unblocked ones. It’s totally up to you, so go with whatever works best!

Regardless on whether or not you choose to block your knit bag, you still have to sew it all together. You can use a tapestry needle or your crochet hook to sew your bag together. If you choose to use your crochet hook, you will use a slip stitch.
With your bag inside out, line up the ridges (you should have 7 ribs on both sides) and stitch both sides together using the long tails you left when you casted on and bound off.
The bag still being inside out, now you are going to attach the straps. Using the long tails you left on your strap, sew the strap inside of the bag. I went down two sections of stripes to make sure it was secure.
Flip your bag and fill it up! Your done, you did it! I knew you could!
