The Yarn

Before you dive into crocheting your new favorite headband, let’s talk supplies. The first thing you’ll need for this free crochet pattern is yarn—specifically, just one skein of Parfait Chunky Yarn. You won’t even use the whole thing! I was able to make 6 adult and 3 child-size twisted ear warmers from just 3 skeins.

For my Candy Heart Collection, I used these sweet shades:

This yarn is ridiculously soft and fuzzy, and it comes in so many fun colors. Trust me—once you see how quick and easy these are to make, you’ll want one in every color of the rainbow!

The Tools

Once you’ve picked out your yarn, the rest of the supplies are simple. All you’ll need to complete this twisted ear warmer crochet pattern is a 5mm crochet hook and a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and sewing the headband together.

Now, those are the basics—but if you’re anything like me, you might enjoy a few extra tools that make the process smoother (and a bit more enjoyable). I personally love using a yarn bowl to keep my skein from bouncing around or getting tangled while I work. It’s not a must-have, but it definitely helps keep things neat—especially if you’re crocheting on the couch with a pet or kid nearby.

Another favorite of mine is a yarn winder. It’s a game changer if you like center-pull yarn cakes that don’t roll all over the place. Again, totally optional, but if you crochet often, it might be worth adding to your toolkit.

Once you’ve got everything gathered, you’re ready to get started!

Me too! Lets do this…

Twisted Ear Warmer Headband – Free Crochet Pattern

Skill Level: Beginner

Materials:

Pattern

Cast on 61 stiches (for adult size) or 51 stitches (for child size) – I used my head to measure for the adult size and my 6 year old daughters head to measure for the child size. So chain until your chain can wrap around your head, touching ends.

Single crochet in the back loop of stitch starting in the 2nd stitch in the chain all the way across, chain 1 and turn (60 sts/50 sts)

Continue for 10 rows (for adult) or 8 rows (for child), tie off leaving a long tail (this is used to sew the ear warmer together)

Now it’s time to assemble your earwarmer! Using the long yarn tail you left, you’ll sew the two ends of the headband together. There are a couple of ways to do this, but for that twisted look, here’s how I like to do it:

Instead of lining up the ends flat, take both ends and fold them in half. Then interlock them—kind of like two hands clasping together. One folded end should sandwich into the other, with the edges alternating top and bottom. It might feel a little weird at first, but once you see it, it’ll make sense!

Sew through all four layers using a whipstitch or your favorite seaming method, then flip the headband right side out—and voilà! You’ve got yourself a soft, fuzzy, candy-colored twisted ear warmer ready to wear or gift!
