The Yarn

Before you dive into the Cozy Calvin Free Crochet Blanket Pattern, let’s talk supplies because this one’s a yarn eater! The thick, cozy texture that makes this blanket so warm and snuggly also means you’ll need a generous amount of yarn to bring it to life.

For my Cozy Calvin, I used 6 skeins of Caron Simply Soft in Dark Country Blue and 6 skeins in Country Blue for those calming ocean-inspired stripes. To balance out the blues and add some grounding contrast, I worked in 5 skeins of Knit and Crochet Essentials in Grey. Since that yarn can be hard to find (and may even be discontinued), I recommend substituting with about 4 skeins of Caron All Day Cotton in Gray. It has a similar weight and feel, and it holds up beautifully in blankets.

The extra yarn gives the Cozy Calvin its signature heaviness giving it that perfect, weighted feel that makes it extra snuggly and perfect for movie nights or curling up in bed. Trust me, it’s worth every stitch!

Why I Will ALWAYS Love Acrylic Yarn

Curious why I reach for acrylic yarn again and again? From cozy blankets to colorful wearables, I’m sharing exactly why it’s my go-to and how it makes my projects shine.

The Other Supplies

Since you have to get so much yarn, it is nice that you won’t need much else to make the Cozy Calvin Free Crochet Blanket Pattern, just a few essentials to keep your project organized and enjoyable. For the hook, I used a 3.5 mm crochet hook, which gives the stitches a tight, cozy texture that adds to the blanket’s satisfying weight.

To keep everything tidy while working, I actually used an old diaper caddy to hold all my factory-wound skeins upright! They fit perfectly and kept my yarn from tangling as the blanket grew. Linked is the EXACT one I used!

You may also want to keep a row counter and a few stitch markers nearby to help keep track of your rows and stitch counts, especially since this blanket is on the larger side. A yarn winder can also come in handy if you prefer to prep your skeins ahead of time, but it’s totally optional.

That’s it just a few simple tools for a relaxing, big, cozy project.

Tips and Tricks

  • If you are new to crochet, use stitch markers every so many stitches to keep stitch count so your blanket doesn’t turn out misshaped.
  • If you choose to not use stitch markers, count the mesh squares after every mesh row – it is WAY easier to count the squares than the stitches.
  • Weave in you ends as you go so you don’t have to at the end – HERE’S HOW

Disclaimer: This blanket actually took me about 6 months to crochet on and off. I started it before this blog even existed! Because of that, I’m offering this free crochet pattern as-is, and it’s not based on standard blanket sizing, I was just winging it! It fits my son’s twin-size bunk bed perfectly from top to bottom, but there is a little bit of overhang on the side. Your blankets may vary.
