The Yarn
The first thing you’ll need for this easy Halloween knitting pattern is the yarn. This pillow cover uses less than one skein each of Red Heart Super Saver in Black, Charcoal, Spring Green, Amethyst, and Pumpkin. It’s a solid choice, but a bit on the scratchy side. I actually made mine with scrap yarn I already had at home.
If I were buying fresh yarn for this project, I’d go with Caron Simply Soft in Black, Charcoal Heather, Lime Light, Iris, and Pumpkin. It’s my go-to yarn for most projects because it is so soft, easy to work with, budget-friendly, and completely machine washable (a must when you have two young kids). These covers have survived countless spins through the wash with other household laundry and always come out perfectly clean and even softer than before!

Why I Will ALWAYS Love Acrylic Yarn
Curious why I reach for acrylic yarn again and again? From cozy blankets to colorful wearables, I’m sharing exactly why it’s my go-to and how it makes my projects shine.

The Needles
Next up are the tools you’ll need to bring this easy Halloween knitting pattern to life. I used my all-time favorite knitting needles, ChiaoGoo Red Lace US Size 3. Over the years, I’ve tried them all: plastic, bamboo, bargain-bin mystery metal… and nothing compares to these. US Size 3 is my absolute favorite size needle for projects like this, so I own more pairs than I care to admit.
If you’re building your knitting supply stash, I can’t recommend the ChiaoGoo Twist Stainless Steel Interchangeable Set enough. Yes, they’re a bit of an investment, but they’re the only set you’ll ever need, unless, of course, you’re like me and somehow end up with five works-in-progress (WIPs) all on the same size needles at the same time.
Once your needles are ready, the next step is making sure you’re confident with the stitches in this pattern. I’ve linked my stitch tutorial videos below, so whether you need a refresher on casting on, changing colors, or working a simple knit stitch for your pillow cover, you’ll have clear, step-by-step guidance to follow along with every stitch.

The Pillow Insert
Once you’ve finished this beginner knitting project, you’ll need a pillow to slip it over! This design is made to fit a 12×18 lumbar pillow. You can use a standard pillow form or repurpose any decorative pillow you already have lying around. Got a cozy rich fall pillow you are not using? Just cover it up with this bright and cheery textured knit and give it a fun spring makeover! If you’re using a pillow form, I recommend doubling up, two inserts in one cover, since they tend to flatten out over time and a fuller look makes your knit pillow extra plump and inviting.

Additional Supplies
There are a few other items that can make knitting this pillow cover pattern a bit easier. First, you might want to grab some stitch markers. For this project, I used three stitch markers. Placing them every few stitches helps break up the count into smaller, more manageable groups. You might also want a row counter. A fun choice that is gaining popularity in the knitting and crocheting community right now is the Counting Numbers Chart Pop It, which is a fun and effective tool. Finally, you’ll need a tapestry needle or a small crochet hook to sew up the sides of the pillow cover.
There are a few other tools I like to use when I knit, though they’re not necessary. I like to use a yarn bowl to keep my yarn organized and prevent it from getting tangled, a fabric shaver to help create crisp lines and that makes the pattern really pop, and a yarn winder to create neat, center-pull yarn cakes.
