There’s a lot of noise out there about yarn quality, sustainability, and eco-friendliness, especially when it comes to acrylic yarns. But here’s the truth: I love acrylic yarn! It’s soft, colorful, affordable, and endlessly versatile. Despite the criticism it sometimes gets in the fiber community, I’ve created some of my most beautiful knit and crochet pieces with it. As someone who tends to make larger projects, I simply can’t justify spending hundreds of dollars on yarn.

Curious what yarns I actually love to use?
I’m not just talking the talk, I’ve knit and crocheted with a lot of yarn over the years, and these are the ones I keep going back to. Soft, vibrant, affordable, and perfect for real-life projects.

What Makes Acrylic Yarn My Go-To Choice
Why I love acrylic yarn comes down to one simple truth. I’m a maker who leans toward larger projects like blankets and pillow covers, and the cost of natural fibers adds up fast. Don’t get me wrong, I have zero hate for natural yarn. I would love to stock my shelves with hand-dyed merino or luxurious alpaca blends. I drool over them constantly. But realistically, that’s just not in my budget. It might never be.
Acrylic yarn lets me fully enjoy knitting and crocheting without breaking the bank. I can still create the cozy, textured, oversized designs I love without spending hundreds of dollars. It gives me the freedom to experiment, play with color, double-strand, or go big with bulky weights without the guilt of using up “the good stuff”.

Durability Is a Plus, Not a Flaw
Some people argue that acrylic yarn lasts too long. In a world overwhelmed by fast fashion, that’s seen as a flaw. But I couldn’t disagree more. When I spend weeks, months or even a year knitting or crocheting something, I want it to last. That isn’t fast fashion. It’s slow, intentional making. And that’s exactly why I love acrylic yarn.
I want the throw blanket that stands up to toddler spills and Netflix marathons. I want the ear warmer that survives winter after winter and doesn’t shrink in the wash. Everything in my life has to be machine washable, and my yarn is no exception. If that makes it “low quality” to some people, I’ll proudly wear and share it anyway.

There’s a Time and Place for Every Yarn
Don’t get me wrong, I love natural fibers too. Cotton is perfect for summer wearables, and I’ve got a few luxe skeins of wool tucked away for special projects. I even splurged on some hand-dyed yarn that I still admire every time I open my stash. But why I love acrylic yarn comes down to practicality and creative freedom. It’s not about settling. It’s about choosing the right yarn for the right project and honoring your craft, your creativity, and your budget all at the same time.
