Looking to add a cozy, colorful blanket to your favorite relaxing space? I’ve got you covered! My Bubblegum Betty is a free chunky knit blanket pattern that’s beginner-friendly, super soft, and full of personality.
It was actually designed for my young daughter, Betty, who’s also responsible for the dreamy color combo! I let her loose at JoAnn’s (RIP) and told her to pick three yarn colors for her very own handmade blanket. And wow, did she deliver! This squishy, luxurious throw now lives among a mountain of stuffies and other handmade blankets in her cozy little corner.

The Yarn
Before you jump into this free chunky knit blanket pattern, let’s talk supplies! First up: yarn. For the Bubblegum Betty blanket, I used 4 skeins of Bernat Baby Velvet in Ever After Pink and 3 skeins in Bleached Aqua. These shades are buttery soft and give the blanket its playful, bubblegum-inspired vibe. To balance the brights and add some cozy texture, I also used 2 skeins of Premier Yarns Parfait Chunky in classic white. The combo is ultra plush, beginner-friendly, machine washable and has that luxurious, velvety feel kids (and adults) love to snuggle under.

Why I Will ALWAYS Love Acrylic Yarn
Curious why I reach for acrylic yarn again and again? From cozy blankets to colorful wearables, I’m sharing exactly why it’s my go-to and how it makes my projects shine.

The Needles
Next up, let’s talk tools. For this blanket, you’ll need a 40-inch (100 cm) circular knitting needle in US Size 6 (4.0mm). Even though it’s worked flat, the circular length helps hold all your stitches comfortably without crowding your hands.
For this project, I used my go-to favorites: ChiaoGoo Red Lace Circular Needles in US Size 6 (4.0mm). I’ve tried everything—plastic, bamboo, budget metal, but nothing compares to the smooth glide and durability of these. The cables don’t kink, the joins are seamless, and they just feel right in your hands.
If you’re looking to invest in your knitting toolkit, I highly recommend the ChiaoGoo Twist Stainless Steel Interchangeable Set. Yes, they’re a bit of a splurge, but in my experience, it’s the only needle set you’ll ever truly need and totally worth every penny!

Use up those leftover yarns and treat yourself to the coziest weekend project!
My Everyday Bag is an easy, satisfying knit that turns your stash into something you’ll actually use—because your yarn scraps deserve better than the bottom of a bin.

The Other Stuff
There are few additional tools that can make knitting this blanket even easier. You’ll likely want to have some stitch markers on hand. Placing a marker after a set number of stitches helps you count in smaller sections, especially helpful when knitting blankets. You will also want to have a row counter handy. The pink sections of this blanket are large enough that you may loose track of what row you are on. Lastly, I like to use a yarn bowl to help keep my yarn from tangling, a yarn winder to make perfect center-pull yarn cakes.

Tips and Tricks
- Use at LEAST two stitch markers. One for each end marking were the seed stitch border begins.
- This is how I placed my stitch makers ——> 13-21-21-21-21-21-21-21-21-21-21-21-21-21-13 (this method is also helpful when doing the top and bottom border. You just have to make sure you start each section with knit stitch and you are on the right track.
- Knit all the way across when you change colors to avoid dashed lines on the seed stitch section.
- Weave in you ends as you go so you don’t have to at the end – HERE’S HOW

Disclaimer: This blanket actually took me well over a year to knit on and off. I started it before this blog even existed! Because of that, I’m offering this free tutorial as-is, and it’s not based on standard blanket sizing, I was just winging it! It fits my daughter’s twin-size bunk bed perfectly from top to bottom, but there’s quite a bit of overhang on the sides—so think of it as generously sized and extra snuggly! Your blankets may vary.
Cast on 299 stitches in Ever After Pink. I did 299 stitches and it is pretty wide but still super snuggly. As long as there is an odd number of stitches for this border, you can cast on as many stitches as you like.
The Border
The border for my Bubblegum Betty Knit Blanket is a simple seed stitch as follows:
(RS) Row 1: K1, P1*
(WS) Row 2: K1, P1*
Repeat this for the first 12 rows of your blanket…

The Blanket Body
Now that you have the top border done, reset your counter.
Row 1 (RS – White): K*
Row 2 (RS – Teal): Slide to the other end of needle – K*
Rows 3-5 (Teal): 13SD, ST* to last 13 stitches, SD to end
Row 6 (RS – White): K*
Row 7 (RS – Pink): Slide to the other end of needle – K*
Row 8-19 (Pink): 13SD, ST* to last 13 stitches, SD to end
Repeat to desired length. I ended up with 25 pink rows not including the border.
Reset Counter
Repeat the seed stitch for the last 12 rows and bind off
And that’s it! SO EASY right?!
